There she stood each day of Vacation Bible School at the Ishe Anesu Project at Hill Top Methodist Church. She ran and played in the games and worked hard at making her craft projects and always had a smile. Yet, what captured my attention every day were her shoes. Maria told us that each day she came, wearing her very best, to be a part of this program at the church. Also on Sunday morning for the worship service these were her Sunday shoes. In fact they were her only shoes. As I watched, I remembered these words I had seen many times, “I felt sorry for myself because I had no shoes—until I met a man who had no feet”.
Somehow the reality of the depth of need came screaming at me. Children who walk miles each day seeking an education or water, food or shelter often do not have shoes. I have a closet full of shoes. I throw away shoes that still have lots of life in them compared to the shoes she wore. Our complaints are so petty and shallow in the face of the struggle of these children in so many places in the world. Can we stop today and do something about the plight of children? Yes we can! Pray for children in general. Then select the face of a child you know and ask God to love all the precious children in the world who are seen in this one face. Then reach out and help a child in a setting of need. For example, read to a child, stop by the library or school and buy a book for a child. Commit to a child sponsorship through World Vision or compassion International or check with Alison Johnson Mistak with AYA international. She is in our church family . You may help, (as many of you already are) with the School in Paraguay through Samaritan Hands or our orphanage, Hogar Del Nino, in Guatemala. Someone has said we cannot help all the needy children in the world but we can help One. Pray for One, Support One, Care for One, and for that One it will make all the difference in the world.
