Paul wrote these words to the Christian family “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” The idea and fabric of joy and thanksgiving is woven within our souls. The question for us is do we allow this gift to shine as if it were a light within us. The scripture declares joy (181 times) and thanksgiving (136 times) is a part of what we are to be expressing in our hearts and lives. In fact it had such prominence that a priest was assigned the role of leading the congregation in expressing its thanksgiving. When Nehemiah and his workers finished rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem they recognized the moment with a service of Thanksgiving. This month as we approach the thanksgiving holiday, I want us each to prepare for this day all the month long by daily being a people who pause and gives thanks.
William Law, a wonderful Christian, wrote, “Would you know who is the greatest saint in the world? It is not he who prays most or feasts most, it is not he who gives alms most…but it is he who is always thankful to God…who receives everything as an instance of God’s goodness and has a heart always ready to praise God for it.”
Let us count our blessings one by one and in doing so we shall truly see what the Lord has done. Smile your way through these days with a thankful heart. This would please God. Besides, this might make us easier to live with the members of the family of God.
